UN:Me: A Cerebral Horror Merging Survival Horror with Social Deduction Mechanics
The recent Day of the Devs digital showcase revealed several intriguing upcoming titles, but one especially has seized attention: UN:Me. Created by Historia and Shueisha Games, this solo experience appears to blend the oppressive atmosphere of a Silent Hill game with the suspicion-driven heart of Among Us.
"This is a unique game where a young woman harboring several human souls inside her must escape from a labyrinth of the mind," states producer Yasukazu Kawai.
Stepping Into a Fractured Mind
In UN:Me, players take control of an unnamed heroine seeming to be of high school age. Within her reside four separate personas, all possessing unique fears and drives. These entities can take over spontaneously, unleashing their deep-seated terrors upon her suddenly.
Based on showcased footage, much of the narrative unfolds within a creepy medical facility, though additional clips show the protagonist exploring a desolate church.
A World of Personal Dread
"What makes you afraid of? What causes you uneasy?" asks creative lead Shun Sasaki. "High places. Confined spaces. Authority figures. Elements that seem trivial to others can activate a deep instinct inside us. This game delves into that idea — anxieties that are unique to each person."
The core gameplay loop revolves around managing whichever soul emerges at any given moment. However, these souls will switch against your will as you play. During exploration, each soul's anxieties become amplified and assault the protagonist in succession. As the persona shifts, so does the particular terror the player experiences.
Eerie Visuals and a Fatal Choice
At first glance, UN:Me shares noticeable visual similarities with the Silent Hill franchise. The setting is populated by orderlies who all share the identical visage, with unnervingly wide grins. Figures in the waiting room have enormous flowers where their necks should be. Floral motifs are a recurring theme, juxtaposing organic elegance with supernatural dread.
Yet, UN:Me introduces a unique twist. Players must determine which of the four entities haunting the heroine is the "real" one. "Each of the personas claims that the body is rightfully them," notes a creator. "Throughout the game, you need to figure out who is real."
After a player have deduced a soul is fake, they are forced to destroy it. However, since every entity can lie or hide the truth, it is incredibly simple to make a mistake.
"Perhaps you've already eliminated the true [soul] with your own hands," the narration suggests. "The final entity standing could be a fraud. Either way, your choices are irreversible."
UN:Me currently lacks a confirmed release date, but it is can be follow on platforms.
