Israelis have come together throughout the country to remember the second anniversary since the Hamas-conducted offensive on 7 October 2023, as talks advanced in the neighboring country over a resolution to the war in Gaza.

The assault resulted in in excess of 1,200 people losing their lives and 251 others captured away to Gaza as captives. It was the single most lethal day for Jews since the Holocaust.

Israel responded by initiating a military offensive in Gaza which has claimed in excess of 67,000 people, according to the territory's Hamas-administered health ministry. Its statistics are regarded as accurate by the United Nations and other world agencies.

"The bloodthirsty adversaries have hit us hard, but they have not broken us," the prime minister added on that day.

He also pledged to "realize all the aims of the war: the homecoming of all the captured, the elimination of the Hamas administration and the assurance that Gaza will not pose a threat to Israel".

Remembrance Events Across Israel

The government authorities delayed official remembrance events until 16 October - after the end of the festive season - but ceremonies still took place across the country on that day.

A remembrance service for the families of Israeli citizens killed in the Hamas assault was conducted in the coastal city. Arranged by the families themselves, it was aired on Israeli TV networks.

Hours earlier, a silent tribute was respected across the country.

Negotiation Meetings in Egypt

At the same time, the conflicting parties' representatives gathered in the North African coastal city of Sharm el-Sheikh for a second day of third-party negotiations to review the provisions of the plan.

A high-ranking delegate involved in the discussions revealed that an night meeting of negotiations commenced at evening in Egypt.

The representative stated the day's discussions finished without concrete outcomes, due to differences over the proposed Israeli pullout plans from Gaza and over guarantees Hamas wants to ensure Israel does not resume fighting after the initial stage of the agreement.

He added that the discussions are "tough and have not yet achieve any major advancement," but noted that facilitators are striving to narrow the differences between the two sides.

Critical Issues in Discussions

  • A permanent truce
  • The exchange of the hostages still held by Hamas for detainees from Gaza
  • The withdrawal of Israeli forces from Gaza
  • Measures for relief supplies deliveries
  • Future administration of the region

Civilian Sentiment

In the city's memorial area previously, young Hagar - whose sibling survived the attack on the outdoor event, where hundreds were murdered and numerous more were captured by Hamas gunmen - told: "No place feels like home anymore and until all the hostages return no one will be secure."

"When we see everybody home again, we can breathe anew. Then we can commence rebuild," she concluded.

In front of Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu's residence in the capital, people congregated to demonstrate their solidarity for the relatives of the hostages. Israel says nearly fifty continue in captivity in Gaza, approximately twenty of whom are considered to be surviving.

Protester Atalia Regev stated: "We need do whatever arrangement needed for the captives to be released. But we really want guarantees that we will be secure."

Opinion polls now frequently demonstrate that about seventy percent of the population want the hostilities to end in return for the release of the hostages.

Palestinian Situation

At the site of Nova festival, those paying respects came together to honor the dead.

From there, the boom of aerial bombardments and artillery could be heard just a brief space away in Gaza, where local people indicated the intense Israeli attacks persisted.

In Gaza City, bombardments were documented in the dawn of Tuesday in the west side district, Rimal and zone areas and in the eastern neighbourhood of the community, as well the camp to the north-west.

"Once the dusk falls, the fear comes with it," evacuated Gaza City resident a local woman, whose teenage son was lost his life by an Israeli air strike earlier, shared.

"We are terrified of the bombings. During nighttime we are resting together, clinging, notably my youngest child who puts his face on me throughout the night."

"Every second we monitor the news to see developments. And I'm worried that this halt will not be completed and that the war will resume to us."

Humanitarian Situation

Al-Shifa hospital in Gaza City announced it had taken in the corpses of six people by the afternoon, including three who lost their lives in an Israeli strike in the southern district.

Another medical facility in the southern urban center of that area indicated two more fatalities had been transported. One of them was killed by Israeli troops while seeking aid to the south region, health workers reported.
