The acclaimed crime series AC-12 is officially returning for its seventh installment, announced by the BBC.

An upcoming six-part series written by the show's creator starts production in Northern Ireland in the coming months, as confirmed by the production team.

Vicky McClure shared her enthusiasm about the comeback, saying she was "so excited" about the show's renewal. Her co-star added, "How wonderful it is to know that the main trio will be reuniting together next year."

The previous season wrapped up in recent years with a final episode that drew in over 17 million audience members. Speculation about a potential return have been circulating for some time, but confirmation only arrived this week.

Fresh Obstacles for AC-12

Series seven begins with the anti-corruption unit having been disbanded and rebranded as the new police oversight body, according to production details.

Martin Compston's character, Kate Fleming, and Ted Hastings continue tasked to tackle corruption within the police force.

The team's mission "has never been more difficult", and under these circumstances, the trio are assigned their "most delicate case to date."

New Character and Intricate Plot

An additional officer, DI Dominic Gough, portrayed as a charismatic officer celebrated for busts of organized crime, faces allegations of abusing his position to act as a sexual predator.

However, his case might serve as a intentional diversion from a larger danger still operating in the shadows, the teaser suggested.

Speaking about the renewal, Jed Mercurio commented: "All cast and crew are deeply thankful to the dedicated viewers."

"We're privileged to have had countless fans track the ups and downs of AC-12 over six previous seasons and we couldn't be more delighted to be coming back for a new installment."

Mercurio continued: "Corruption in this country is supposed to have ended while Line of Duty was not airing, so I've been forced to use my imagination."

Show History

The drama launched in the early 2010s and became one of the most popular television series of the last decade, featuring guest stars such as Thandiwe Newton.

Broadcasters has not yet announced exactly the new season will premiere.

The conclusion of series six drew the extended plot about the hunt for kingpin known as "the mysterious H" to a close, and producers indicated at the time there were no plans for further series.

However, the network announced on this week that a new season is now in development.
