The English golfer Wins the Abu Dhabi Title in Dramatic Playoff Battle Against Tommy Fleetwood

Aaron Rai demonstrated exceptional nerve to secure the prestigious Abu Dhabi title on Sunday, beating Tommy Fleetwood in a dramatic playoff after a rollercoaster final round of play.

The Englishman sank a crucial birdie putt from around eight foot to seal the win, echoing his only previous tournament triumph at the Scottish Open in 2020, which was likewise a playoff victory against Fleetwood.

Sunday's Play Excitement

Rai started the last day with a single stroke lead over fellow Englishman Tommy Fleetwood and Danish golfer Højgaard. He ended up with a total score of twenty-under after a topsy-turvy, five-under final round that featured seven birdie putts and a pair of bogeys.

The challenger moved one shot clear with two holes to play after a birdie putt on the 16th, but his rival tied it up again on the seventeenth and then missed a ten-foot birdie putt to win outright on the final green.

Play-Off Climax

That led to a playoff at Yas Links where Rai prevailed to claim the title and $1.5m (£1.13m) in prize money.

{“Tommy is a world-class golfer and an even more individual. To play with him the last two days was really special,” said Rai, the present world No 30. “You’re so focused on your game and staying in the zone, it’s difficult to describe at the moment how it is. It is incredible to be stood here.”

Notable Contenders

The Northern Irish star found himself just too much to do, finishing a stroke behind in a tie for third with Højgaard, after a stunning 10-under final round of 62. It was his best-ever score on the European Tour, comprising eight birdie putts and one eagle.

The Danish golfer fired six birdies of his own, but his hopes of leading the leaderboard were dented by a bogey on the 12th. English golfer Mansell produced an excellent final-round 63 to finish in a tie for fifth place with Australian Daniel Hillier.
