The City of Seattle's Pride Celebrations to Proceed During FIFA Tournament In Spite of Formal Protests from Egypt and Iran
Plans for Pride-focused events and activities in Seattle during the upcoming World Cup will continue unabated, despite the Egyptian and Iranian football federations raised objections about a planned “Pride Match.”
Venue Regulations Alongside City Celebrations
Seattle's planning committee stated clearly they are “proceeding as planned” with celebratory programming in the city center. These events will take place around the Group G fixture between Egypt and Iran on 26 June. Furthermore, the tournament's governing body has a policy allowing rainbow flags to be brought into the match venue.
“In our role as hosts, SeattleFWC26’s primary task is to prepare our city to host the matches and manage the city experience beyond Seattle Stadium,” stated the vice-president of communications.
Cultural Background Behind the Objections
Homosexuality is illegal under Iranian law, and in Egypt, morality laws are frequently employed to prosecute individuals from the LGBTQ+ community. Egypt's football association stated it refused to be associated with events that “fundamentally oppose the social, religious and cultural values … in Islamic and Arab societies.” Similarly, Iran’s football federation also raised “objections against the issue.”
FIFA's Stance Regarding Symbols
Fifa maintains full authority of stadiums during games. Although its rules forbid political signage with political messages, it permits flags expressing “social and sporting symbols,” a category which includes the Pride flag. This regulation was applied at the previous World Cup in Qatar and was reaffirmed following reports of authorities confiscating flags.
- The Pride Match concept was devised to showcase Seattle’s longstanding tradition of advocating for equality.
- A design contest is underway to produce artwork to commemorate the event.
- Planners have pledged to ensuring all fans feel welcome in the city throughout the tournament.
The Pacific Northwest hosts a significant largest Iranian-American communities, a vibrant Egyptian expatriate community, and diverse populations from every competing country. “We’re committed is to ensuring everyone encounter the warmth, respect and dignity that defines our part of the country,” organizers added.
