Russell Wilson Responds at Ex-Mentor Sean Payton Over Quarterback Remarks
NY Giants signal-caller Russell Wilson didn't mince words on social media this Tuesday, reacting to latest comments from his former coach Sean Payton.
"Tasteless... but not shocked...," Wilson stated via social media. "Had no idea you're still bounty hunting 15+ years later through the press."
The quarterback's remarks pointed to the infamous Bounty Gate controversy from 2009-11, when Payton was coaching the New Orleans Saints.
During that period, the NFL found that the Saints had rewarded players for delivering aggressive tackles on opponents. As a result, Payton was suspended from the NFL for a full year.
What Sparked the Latest Dispute
The quarterback's response came after Payton delivered comments following Denver's remarkable comeback win over the Giants. The coach remarked that the team had "found a little spark" with their new QB, who has taken over Wilson as the starting quarterback.
Additionally, Payton implied that he had told Giants owner John Mara that he would rather facing Wilson instead of Dart.
"I spoke to John Mara not too long ago and I said, 'We hoped that change would've happened long after our game,'" the coach stated.
Context of the Coach-QB Partnership
- The quarterback joined the Broncos from the Seahawks in 2022 and inked a five-year, $245M contract.
- The Broncos finished 4-11 in his first season prior to the team hired Payton, who was coming back to the sidelines after a stint in TV commentary.
- Payton benched Wilson late into the 2023 season, a move that ensured the player from getting injured.
If Wilson remained on the team by spring 2024, his $37 million pay for 2025 would have been guaranteed. In the end, Wilson was let go, marking the ugly split between the quarterback and his coach.
