Harvard ex-president Summers Resigns from AI Company's Directors

Board Resignation
The economist announced he would retreat from public duties after House committee disclosed his regular communications with Jeffrey Epstein

One-time economic leader Larry Summers is leaving the governing body at the artificial intelligence firm, just a week after a collection of electronic messages between him and late convicted sex offender the accused trafficker became public.

The economist stated in a statement that he was "appreciative for the privilege to have served, enthusiastic about the prospects of the organization, and anticipate following their advancement".

The former Harvard president, who once led the prestigious university, announced on Monday that he would be withdrawing from public roles due to his association with Epstein.

Digital Correspondence

The recently released emails showed that the official corresponded with the financier until the 24 hours preceding Epstein's 2019 detention for alleged sex trafficking of young people.

In another announcement, the AI firm stated it understood the economist's determination to depart.

"We appreciate his many contributions and the perspective he provided to the governing body," the organization stated.

Legislative Background

This announcement arrives after the two houses of Congress agreed on this week to pass a legislation that would compel the federal prosecutors to disclose its documents on the case.

The measure will subsequently head to the office of President Trump for endorsement. Trump has said he expects to sign the legislation, after modifying his stance on the matter following pressure from his supporters.

Message Details

A batch of Epstein-related emails made public by the legislative panel last week included several well-known personalities in the financier's past associates, without suggesting any illegal behavior by those individuals.

The communications showed that the economist and Jeffrey Epstein regularly had dinners together, with he often attempting to introduce the official to prominent world leaders.

Individual Statement

After the correspondence were made available with the wider community, the former official expressed he assumed "total ownership for my misguided decision to maintain communicating with the financier".

He continued that he desired "to restore faith and mend connections with the people closest to me".

Career Background

The economist held high-level positions under Democratic administrations; functioning as treasury secretary under Bill Clinton, and as leader of the National Economic Council under the former leader.

He headed the university from five years and is still a professor there. When announcing his step-down from public roles previously on this week, he said he would persist with his educational duties.

Further Repercussions

Following Summers' announcement on earlier this week, the Washington think tank, a liberal think tank in DC where he was a prominent member, verified that he was ceased to be connected with the organization.

Summers became part of the board of OpenAI, which creates the language model, in last year - following a failed attempt to oust its CEO OpenAI's head.
