Gavin Newsom Acknowledges He Is Weighing a Presidential Campaign for 2028

Gavin Newsom, a well-known member of the Democratic party, has disclosed that he plans to decide on whether to run for president in 2028 after the 2026 congressional elections wrap up.

"Yes, it would be dishonest if I denied it," Newsom remarked when pressed about giving serious thought to a White House bid following the 2026 elections. "I'd just be lying. And I'm not."

The governor's current term as governor ends in the start of 2027, and term limits prevent another run. However, he noted that any choice is a long way off.

"It's up to destiny," he said.

Rising Profile as a Trump Critic

Newsom has stepped forward as a high-profile opponent of the current federal leadership, using his online platforms and advocating for a proposition that would boost Democratic House seats in as a counter to Republican redistricting efforts. This strategy has made him a target from critics.

Federal Funding Dispute

The former president's transportation chief, Sean Duffy, accused that the governor does not care about Californians in a recent segment on a major news network. The secretary revealed intentions to pull taxpayer dollars from California and suggested suspending the state's ability to issue CDLs.

"I'm about to pull $160 million from the state," he declared, after a this week's fatal crash in California involving an non-citizen semi truck driver that led to three deaths and four injuries.

Newsom's office pointed out that the U.S. government had approved the individual's authorization repeatedly, which permitted him to receive a trucking license under federal law.

The transportation secretary had before stated he was holding back $40m from California for not enforcing English language requirements for commercial drivers.

Firm Rebuttal from the Team

"One-time television figure, now cabinet member, continues to misunderstand federal law," his administration said in a previous statement countering the funding warnings. "For now, in contrast to this person, we focus on reality: The state's truck drivers had a death rate nearly 40% lower than the national average. The state of Texas – the only state with additional licensed drivers – has a rate markedly elevated than the state. Statistics are clear. This administration is dishonest."

Voter Sentiment and Campaign Considerations

A recent study revealed that a majority of the party and 48% of all registered voters believed that Newsom must consider running for the White House in 2028. After the current administration began, his approval ratings has risen to an mean of a third from approximately 30%, while his unfavorability has fallen from an average of previous highs to 38.4%.

Some time ago, Newsom stated while traveling several swing states that he had "no idea" about his future for the next presidential election.

He noted his personal struggles, including being identified as dyslexic at the young age of five.

"The notion that a person who had modest test scores, who still struggles to read scripts, who was always in the back of the classroom – that such a possibility is discussed is, by itself, remarkable," he stated. "Who the hell knows? I am eager to see who steps forward in 2028 and who meets that moment. And that remains the key point for the U.S. citizens."
