Eurovision Was Once a Whimsical Delight – Yet It Has Become a Calculated Tool to Whitewash War.
An freshly coined acronym surfaced a couple of months after the start of the military campaign against Gaza. Referred to as WCNSF, it signifies “Wounded child, no surviving family”. This designation is unique to Gaza, as stated by medical experts including child health specialists. Normally, it is uncommon for doctors to care for a child who has lost their whole family. However, there has been no semblance of normality concerning the genocide in Gaza, where entire family lineages have been obliterated and the number of young amputees surpasses that of any other region in the world. No sense of normalcy in numerous doctors coming back from a devastated terrain with testimonies of children being systematically aimed at.
A Hell on Earth Despite a Announced Cessation of Hostilities
Gaza remains hell on earth. Vital medicines and equipment are not getting in those in need, and groups like Amnesty International have stated that genocidal acts are continuing. Officials rejects these accusations, consistent with how it disavows all charges it is charged with. Yet as traumatised orphans are now suffering from the cold in temporary shelters, there is a piece of uplifting information: apparently nothing is going to stop the Eurovision from pursuing its stated mission of “unity and artistic sharing.” Organizers will continue to extend a prestigious stage for Israel, although a number of European countries have now withdrawn in objection. Because this, we are told, is what unity looks like.
The contest, notably prohibited Russia from participating in 2022 due to the “serious conflict in Ukraine”. But the crisis in Gaza seems entirely distinct.
A Selective Vision
Disregard the reality that Israel was alleged to have used unfair vote practices last year in what seems to have been an attempt to politicise Eurovision. Set aside the news that a three-year-old girl was reportedly killed in Gaza recently. Forget the fact that aggression from Israeli settlers and coerced removal in the West Bank have increased dramatically. Overlook the situation that foreign reporters are still denied unfettered access in Gaza. This entire context, evidently, should be allowed to get in the way of Eurovision’s self-proclaimed spirit of unity.
The Show Goes On Amidst Unimaginable Suffering
Eurovision turns 70 next year – almost double the projected longevity of someone in Gaza at present. The event will proceed, but it will likely never recapture the camp joy it once represented. A contest that once promoted togetherness has now become a cynical way to provide a cultural veneer for conflict.
