The offspring of former South African President Jacob G Zuma has entered a not guilty plea to terrorism-related accusations at the beginning of her legal proceedings in the harbor city of Durban city.

Duduzile Zuma-Sambudla, forty-three, is being prosecuted over comments she made on social media several years back during fatal protests in South Africa that followed the apprehension of her dad.

A period of chaos in multiple regions of the country in July 2021, including plundering and fire-setting, left at least three hundred dead and resulted in damage worth an approximate $2.8bn (2.2 billion pounds).

The defendant has been charged of encouraging this turmoil and is charged with allegations of provocation to commit terror acts and public disorder.

Context of the Legal Matter

The protests were concentrated in the areas of Gauteng region and KwaZulu-Natal province and came after the previous president's detention for ignoring a judicial ruling to testify at an inquiry into claims of impropriety while he was holding office.

She has consistently denied the allegations against her, with her legal representative in the past labelling the prosecution's case as insufficient.

She has also consistently said the allegations against her were an effort to address political scores with her father after he founded his own political party and ran against the African National Congress.

Endorsement and Court Representation

This was echoed by the Zuma foundation, which stated the proceedings was an "abuse of power" and a "coordinated attempt" of "politically motivated and familial harassment" against the ex-leader and his kin.

A handful of supporters from her political organization, uMkhonto weSizwe, appeared outside the KwaZulu-Natal high court, while her parent and other organization officials participated in the hearings inside.

The defendant's representatives has argued that the proof presented by government lawyers is unconvincing and fails to provide compelling evidence for a conviction.
