Canada's skeleton athletes have been absolved of charges that they rigged a selection race for the Winter Olympics, thereby denying competitors from other nations a spot to qualify.

A prominent American athlete a five-time Olympian alleged the Canadian squad of withdrawing a majority of its competitors from a recent event in New York. The allegation was this reduced the field, making a lower points pool available. Despite winning the event, Uhlaender did not secure her qualifying position for the Milan-Cortina Games.

“The current IBSF Rules allow member nations to withdraw athletes from an event at any time,” declared the International Bobsleigh & Skeleton Federation (IBSF).

Following an investigation, the IBSF announced it would not impose sanctions, rejecting the allegations as no rules were broken of its code.

Defense and Rationale

Reacting to the claims, the Canadian federation stood by the withdrawals, pointing to competitor health and the need for rest. They asserted that some athletes had already raced multiple times that week and the decision was “appropriate, transparent and aligned with both their well-being and the integrity of the sport.”

The 41-year-old athlete, the Milan-Cortina Games represent her last Games. While she can still qualify, the probable US team spots are projected for other athletes. Uhlaender is a former world champion whose best Games result was just off the podium in Sochi 2014.
