‘All those silly things – do them’: Guruzeta’s path from injury table to scoring with Athletic Bilbao

Thehe debut appearance Gorka Guruzeta played in England, an young appearing for Athletic Bilbao B against German opponents at Adams Park in the 2015 season, he found the net. On his next visit he appeared in British turf, against the English side two months later, he converted. The third time, against the Citizens not long later, well, he scored again. As he revisited to the northwest to take on Manchester United at the sports complex in 2017, he found the back of the net. An excellent finish, too. “In fact,” he says, “it’s a top-class goal in my career.” Therefore the team did their duty: he was replaced.

“I became very upset,” the forward says, then chuckling. “Probably there’s a recording. We went to play United and I performed well. They didn’t let me play the second half: I was without a signed my contract, goals were flowing, there were lots of rumours, as you’d expect. No confirmation on interest from Newcastle, but I remember reading about Man United, the typical thing. I’m not certain the validity, but even if they had called, my desire was to remain at Bilbao. I feel lucky to be here.”

La Real relieve strain with extraordinary derby triumph

At the training ground, the Basque Country, the early training is ready to commence; post-session, the quick travel to Loiu and another trip to the UK, on this occasion to play Newcastle in the UCL on midweek. Uttering the name brings a smile to his face. It’s turning out to be a tough year for the club, partly because of the demands of being here. Losing in stoppage time in the derby on Saturday, they have managed just one win of their past eight league games and been defeated by Arsenal and Dortmund in the continental stage. However, look at the overall situation, the big nights he has lived and future challenges, and a sense of thankful reflection about him.

In the three years since he had come back to Athletic, the striker has been a semi-final participant, denied at the last hurdle a final at home by Manchester United, and has traveled on a traditional boat along the Nervión river flanked by a huge crowd after securing the Spanish cup, the team’s initial silverware in 40 years. Currently he stands as Athletic’s top scorer in the UCL, where they are unique and making their first appearance in ten years. “This was beyond my dreams,” he says.

The player believed it challenging enough just to earn a spot and he was right. Born to the former Real Sociedad player the former professional and a regular attendee at the team he now opposes, the forward is a graduate of Antiguoko, the San Sebastián club that nurtured Mikel Arteta, Xabi Alonso and the Bournemouth manager. He signed for Athletic at his teens but after his first-team bow in that summer, he experienced a torn cruciate, dropped, a drop in category and a call back before he could truly get a chance, returning at 26 to enjoy the highlights of their lives.

Gorka Guruzeta in training
Gorka Guruzeta gets ready to play Newcastle in the Champions League.

“Joining the setup doubting you’ll make the senior squad but every phase you go through you’re persisting and you can see it getting closer. You get there but … you have to leave.” He had limited game time in a handful of matches between his first game and early 2019. “And then I go back down to the filial [Bilbao Athletic, the Under-23s]. Five, six games there and I suffered the ACL injury.

“A massive setback but I reflect on it as a beneficial experience because it shifted the way I saw things. Healing from a serious ailment is challenging, but it aids growth. You cultivate routines previously lacking. Previously I was casual, but I would go to training and then head home, typical youth behavior. At Lezama, you have everything, so take full advantage. Work, precaution. Strength training. With hip imbalance, correct it. Assuming ankle mobility is good, improve it more. All those ‘silly things’: execute them.

“Among professionals you’re going to crash into players who have been in battles countless occasions. They’re so strong. Seeing previous pictures: my physique was slight. Thus incidents occur. Current photos and it’s totally different. Injury made me see that. Sessions end, but further effort is needed. Peers are prepared, really ready; no exceptions.”

Minutes are crucial. The striker moved upset in that year, in his early twenties, joining the second tier. With Sabadell in the 20-21 campaign, he netted three goals in numerous matches. During his Amorebieta stint in the latter part of the season, the goals started to flow. “Many experience this: temporary moves, ended deals. If you turn it round, effort, faith, and if one day the requirement appears in your position, they might come back for you. Preparation is key. Upon the recall, an aspiration fulfilled. To then win the Copa del Rey, play in Europe, and make the UCL … pfff.”

Little surprise he states this is to be enjoyed. Particularly after the prior campaign which, on occasions, was focused on persistence. From top scorer with a high tally, his output dropped to seven in {15 games more|additional matches|
