Adult Swim's Premier New Show of This Year Gets a Substantial Extension for Two More Seasons.
During the fall season, the late-night programming block debuted a new season of its quirky hit, Smiling Friends. Yet, shortly thereafter, the network introduced a completely new animated series with a markedly softer feel. Haha, You Clowns proved to be gentle and comforting, evoking a cartoon version of a serene talk show. In an era often characterized by cynicism, this show's earnestness resonated deeply and turned it into a surprise hit.
A Major Commitment
On December 18th, the network revealed exciting news: Haha, You Clowns has been greenlit for a further two seasons. This offers creator Joe Cappa ample opportunity to further explore the story of the Campbell family. The series centers on three polite teenage brothers whose primary trait is their deep love for their single father, with Cappa voicing for all four key characters.
"My deepest thanks go to the fans of the show who welcomed the series and helped it grow," remarked Cappa. "It's thrilling that I get to continue exploring the Campbell household for seasons to come."
Executive Acclaim
Accompanying the news commendation from Adult Swim president Michael Ouweleen, who described the series as "radically heartfelt and uniquely eerie." He shouted out the fans who embraced the show and advocated for its distinctly quirky style.
"All of you supported this new show, praised it on social media, and grew it week over week so we could approve not one, but two more seasons," said Ouweleen. "To quote: 'You are strong! You are loved!'"
A Different Kind of Comedy
Earlier this fall, Haha, You Clowns was praised as "a comforting antidote" to more cynical adult animated fare. It offers something surprisingly comfy about observing this charming family navigate their everyday routines.
Previously, creator Joe Cappa expressed his goal to move the comedy genre beyond its current layer of irony. He attributed this trend to the rise of certain blockbuster franchises.
“There's this level of irony that we can't get ourselves out of,” said Cappa. “It's like we have to know we’re the smartest person in the room when we're watching stuff. I feel like we've been doing this for a decade, and we need to laugh at something different now. It's time for comedy to grow.”
Future Seasons
Now, with Haha, You Clowns set to continue, Cappa could potentially help usher in that change he described. Or at the very least, the renewal promises audiences more opportunities to enjoy the warm glow of the beloved Campbell clan.
The final episode of Season 1 of Haha, You Clowns will premiere on December 21st. The entire series is ready to watch on HBO Max.
