A Pig's Tale: Pig Named 6-7 Granted Clemency by Miami-Dade Mayor.
It might not have been at the identical stature as sparing festive fowl, but the Miami-Dade County mayor had her own presidential-style act this week by ritually sparing the life of a pig named Six Seven.
Daniella Levine Cava executed the holiday gesture at the Cuban-style Latin Cafe 2000 in the center of Miami’s iconic Little Havana neighborhood.
“This animal is guiltless. Clemency is justified for her. Her criminal record is spotless,” Levine Cava said in a speech with obvious nods to the sheer volume of executive clemencies issued from the start of the commencement of a new presidential term.
“Except perhaps for eating half a dozen apples per day,” she went on. “Let this swine have a prosperous future away from worry.”
This ceremony, either celebrating or rejecting the area's customary feast of feasting on pork during the holidays, was founded to replicate the yearly bird sparing at the White House.
The swine, donated by a local firefighter, was given its name from the popular vernacular phrase of young people shouting “six seven” – deriving from a musical verse – often for no discernable reason. The craze became so ubiquitous that a major dictionary recently made “six-seven” its annual vocabulary selection.
A Peaceful Retirement
Six Seven the pig is now destined to live out its days at a farm sanctuary “far from charcoal and roasting pans”, according to the ceremony's official statement.
“The pig pardon has become one of our favorite ways to open the holiday season,” said the event host, in a decidedly positive message.
“It represents the spirit of Miami: joyful, varied, and based in heritage that bring people together. Each year, we are proud to celebrate tradition and kindness in a way distinctively Miamian.”
Guests enjoyed a vegetarian menu of spinach croquetas and cafecito as they marked the pig's pardon.
